You should be stocked up well in advance to avoid those types of situations. :P

I find that injecting slower and, as you mentioned, waiting a few seconds before removing the needle helps. A sure fire way to avoid and leakage is to use a z-track (or z-line) injection. It's a bit trickier if you're not comfortable injecting yourself yet but an excellent way to avoid any leakage.
