Ive been hearing a lot of complaining from the general populace about this mandate of school lunches having to be under 850 calories. The complaints usually consist of. "Thats not enuf fewd for my boy" to "Thur taken are freedums away" Here is my take on this issue, feel free to post your comments on this issue I think it is a great one.

First of all I believe that 850 calories is plenty for a lunch meal for an average kid. Most of these kids are sedentary, at school all day and then go home and xbox with their dragon hero friends. The athletic kids willl want more calories but I think they can supplement with healthy food choices before and after practice in the afternoon. When I wrestled me and a couple of guys would split a package of peppridge farm turkey lunch meat after workouts. Yea I was hungry all the time but my coach was really good on teaching us proper nutrition. Even for the fatties there is nothing stopping them from buying another lunch or bringing their own.

Secondly on the freedoms issue.. I believe that is a moot point. The argument here is the government is trying to control school lunches..Well they have always done that. Its not like the kids had much of a choice to begin with. It was usually just between salisbury steak and pizza pockets. Now it is possibly between grilled chicken and a tuna sandwich. One again if you want your child to eat junk then you can allow them to bring their own crap. I think it is detrimental for society to have a child make his own decision between a hot pocket and iceberg lettuce salad.

I recently got an alumni email from my old undergrad university concerning homecoming and it listed the candidates for homecoming queen. Not a single fit and athletic one among them.. These are 22 year old girls! They should all be thin and trim, especially homecoming queen candidates! The diet that has been a staple for generations in America is deteriorating our society and I feel that this school lunch program is a step in the right direction.

I've seen what they serve at my daughter's school for lunch & half of the time is pretty much crap.. My kids have always taken their own lunch prepared by me..
I don't really know how much of an impact this "reduced calorie" lunch can actually have on childhood obesity, even if u restrict the kids lunch & substitute fatty foods for healthier ones, if the kid gets home & eats a whole pizza & litter of coke, & a box of twinkies...then the effort is pretty much worthless..
Childhood obesity is a problem that won't just end by restricting school lunches... parents & other factors come into play..

I did read that for highschool kids regardless weather a boy, girl, athtlete or not the protein portion is 1 oz... and that's pretty crazy since an athlete's needs are much higher than that..

And no offense, but I don't agree with your comment....

Yes, being healthy is important, but u don't have to be "Trim, thin" to be a homecoming candidate, people come in all shapes and sizes, & candidates should be picked based on other qualities, not based on the dress size they wear...
