Deadlift Help/Question

On my last post, I mentioned that my grip was lacking and that I couldn't handle the weight. I've now improved but I still tend to get loose grips when I get heavy on the deadlift.

I was wondering, when I get to a weight where my hands can't handle it but my back can, should I strap up to keep working my back, or just chill out, do lighter weights without straps and hope that my grip catches up?

Right now I'm in the 225-245 range of weight without straps but at the same time that's when my hands start to give out. I know my back can handle more but my hands just don't allow it without straps.

this is a debatable issue. i have heard it go both ways. i used straps when i needed to use them and let my deads get as heacy as i could lift. i would go without them until i had to use straps and then use straps. i would also work on grip.

Start holding heavy dumbells in your hands till they give out, should help with the grip :druggie: Do 4 sets at least

yeah, exactly what I have done.

load up a bar in the racks and just practice your grip strength, you'll get there if you keep at it

I've started doing just that, and it takes time, but it works for sure...

I've relied on straps way too much on just about all my back exercises (rows, pulldowns, etc.) and my grip strength has suffered.

Don't sacrifice back strength and growth due to a weak grip. Strap up on the heavy sets, but work on grip at the end of every back workout.

static db holds work---but for me what helps lots is reverse grip curls.
And of course pulling deads without straps helps---

I use a over under grip w\chalk.

But i was battling some tendonitis issues these past few months and coulndt train my forearms so I pulled double overhand with straps.

Aint nuttin wrong w\using straps if you dont plan on competing in powerlifting.

But my preferance will always be over under w\chalk --and that is what i am using now. I can hold anything over 405lbs raw w\chalk no problme.

if you want tiny forearms use straps. if you want some pop eye forearms work on your grip strength... use plate pinches, static holds, etc

If your a bber your forearm strength doesn't matter, so don't let your back development lag due to lack of strength. If your a pler that's a totally different stories. If you decide to strap up, make sure to work your forearms extra hard to make up for it.

IMO, this is bad advice.. a) by using straps you will limit the growth of your forearms which is ultimately what you want as a bber and b) why limit yourself just because you're a body builder? 275x6 isnt even heavy weight, he clearly needs help and he wants it so let him do some static holds and what not

imo this is not always the case. i used to couldn't hold more than 405 without straps, but i used straps for the heavier weight and also did grip work. i always went as heavy as possible on deads without straps and only used them when i needed and used straps for my heavier sets only. i also used double overhand grip as heavy as possible without straps, then switched to under/over without straps at heavier weight until eventually going to the straps with double overhand for heaviest sets. did not use straps for any other exercises. my current dead pr is w/o straps. it works but you need to work on your grip and only use straps when you need them.

oh hi skarhead how's it going bro?

truth be told- i can only handle about 225 or so without straps. with straps i'm hitting 405 5x5's, hitting 495 for a 1 rep max. couldnt do it without straps. still working on grip strength, but overall strength is more of my concern rather than trying to bring up my forarm strength to match. i would say it depends on your goals.i fight maa, and no one i'm up against wieghs any where near where my grip lets out. but i can squeeze the fuck outta everyone..lol

Thanks guys for the info. I did deadlift today and decided to not strap up but I did change my hand placement to under/over and I went up to 300lb for one rep. I did single reps of 225/250/275/300. I think this grip is the way to go even though it feels weird. But thanks again.

strap have their places...just don't rely on them all the time. take a time off your deadlifts/back workout and your grip will be stronger
