Excessive gas from high protein diet?

I have noticed that as soon as I started eating a lot more protein (I went from about 80g per day to about 200g per day) I am also having some pretty smelly gas - and it is pretty frequent. Does this happen to everyone? Is there a way to mitigate it (short of stopping eating the protein)?

I do use a protein powder to make up some of the protein needs, Muscle Milk. I do this because even though it is whey based, it is lactose free and I am lactose intolerant. The rest of my protein comes from normal food sources such as meat, milk (lactose free), peanut butter, etc.

Thanks for any input!

Whey still has lactose even if it says it's lactose free. Just tiny bit. Whey can be hard in general. Try something like brown rice protein. Amazing amino acid profile and is very easy to digest. Oh and I do this because we share the same problem. Good luck.

300g protein a day and no excess or smelly gas here. It's probably an intolerance - lactose or gluten. You need to take some digestive help like probiotics, betaine HCL, digestive enzymes, also make sure you're eating enough fibre.

Like MBB said, get yourself a good probiotic (a fridge one, not one of the shitty shelf probiotics) and maybe even some digestive enzymes too. Drink kombucha daily. You can brew it yourself. I make my own and love it. Drinking it right now actually.

Thanks all - I think I will move to the brown rice protein then, like RR88 said. Any good sources for it, or just use my google-fu?

I find its not necessarily the amount but more so the sources, i eat only whole foods and no powder at all anymore and have no gas. When i drank shakes, even if it was only two a day,i always had gas, and felt bloated all the time too.

I wanted to give an update. My gas issues have quickly quieted down to almost nothing. I am shocked that lactose free protein powder still contains enough lactose to destroy my insides! I can eat two slices of pizza without any issues...but two scoops of lactose free whey protein powder crushes my intestines to the ground!

Thank you everyone, from both me and my wife! She thanks you all very, very much. :)

Remember eat more beans America needs the gas! lol, but seriously eat more fiber so your digestion can be more fluid and thus the protein that you do ingest will not sit around longer than it has to in your bowels and cause it to bubble and cause gas. The lactose thing sucks as shakes is all I drink with no gas.
