My boyfriend is having a hard time making any gains. He eats at least every 2 hours. Mostly protien but plenty of carbs. He is 6'4" and 238 lbs. He has cycled 3 times with very little wieght gain. He does not miss workouts at almost any cost (3 times a week). Help if you can! Thanks

Need more information about his diet and workout otherwise it is impossible to help.

What some people consider eating a lot is like fasting to others. If he is not lactose intolerant whole milk is a great weight gainer--drink lots of it.

Eating every 2 hours does not recessarily mean he is eating enough. He needs enough sleep, and needs to train heavy and consistantly.

I could eat every hour and not be eating enough. Depends on ammount per meal. If he is really findng it hard to eat anymore, try a weight gainer.

Also, tell him to join this board asap! We could help him better that way.

1. he doesnt need to eat every 2 hours. 4-5 meals a day is fine. Eating every two hours is comparable to topping off your gas tank at every gas station you see. Food takes MUCH longer to digest, and i remember reading that the aminos from chicken breast stay in your bloodstream for 5 hours or more.

2. at 238, id start off eating about 3600 calories a day. See if you gain any weight in 1-2 weeks. If not, add a few hundred more calories. simple.

for a guy of 6'4 and 238lb, 3600 cals is not enought to even maintain his weight, the requirement just for mainance using the Harris Benedict Formula (considering he is moderatly active) is 3631 cals a day. so to add a pound a week he needs to add at least 500 cal a day so a starting point would be at least 4100 cal a day.
With regards to eating 4-5 times a day this would be 4-5 large meals, your matabolism will be going up and down like a yo-yo, eating 6-7 times a day spread out is far easier and keep you metablism working at a good steady rate.

1. 3600 cals is a starting point. Like I said.
2. He doesnt need to feed all 238 pounds...unless hes 0% bodyfat. How many calories does it take to maintain fat, again?
3. 4 meals, 6 meals...whatever. You dont need to eat every 2 hours.

its funny all the calorific requirement calculators that i have ever used state body weight not LBM, would you mind posting up the calculator which states you need to use you LBM when calculating

you can use LBM or bodyweight, unless youre extremely lean or extremely obese, its not going to make a huge difference, youre generally going to have to make adjustments either way. Using LBM works for me.
