Lose weight quicker with weight training than cardio?

Just read an article that was saying that 90% weight training and 10% cardio will ultimately drop more weight than a crapload of cardio...

Anybody buy into that?

I realize weight training builds muscle and muscle burns fat, but 90-10?

Any thoughts?

The comparison between weight training and cardio relates more to body fat loss than strictly weight loss. Are you trying to lose weight or change your body composition? If you want to lose weight then work on your diet. If you want to change your body composition then weight train more than cardio.

For most people, no way they'll lose more weight lifting. Think about the majority of what your see in the gym, magazine flipping while watching tv and idling along on the exercise bike. Speaking strictly from an endurance athlete back ground, most people who are serious about cardio sports, cycling, runner, blading... spend far more time doing them than they would working out with weights. Lifting is more *efficient* at burning fat but the time spent on (fun) cardio sports more than compensates for the efficiency difference. A 60 mile road bike ride on the weekend will run 3-4 hours depending on the group and terrain. To keep up with that you need at least another 6 hours riding during the week at pace. There go the calories.

I hardly ever do cardio but when I do, it's like 20 minutes after a weight training session. I heard that's just as effective as going on the eliptical or running for 45 minutes.

I dont buy it at all. Yes, if you could only do one of the two , you would want to pick weighttraining, but most people are going to need cardio to really take the fat off.

Yes, it has been proved many times that INTENSE weight training is more effective than cardio at fat loss. Reason being weight training raises your metabolism the whole day, cardio only for about an hour
