I'm almost 22, 5'9", 170 lbs and have been training for 3-4 years. I've made a good amount of gains. However, after these years I've realized I am only able to make good strength/size gains if I'm on a decent caloric surplus (gaining about 4 pounds a month). This causes me to put on a good amount of fat while bulking. This causes me to look like shit while bulking and I just end up losing confidence/feel depressed. I've tried lean bulking (2 pounds a month) but I was gaining strength and size way too slow and certain lifts weren't even going up at all.

I was thinking of running a few cycles which would allow me to gain strength/mass while staying lean but not give too many side effects. Baldness runs on my father's side of the family and I've been taking finasteride+minoxidil since I was 18 which has prevented hair loss for me. What would be a good cycle to run which would allow me to gain mass while staying lean and have minimal side effects?

Also, although I'm looking to gain both strength and mass, I prioritize strength.

You should wait until you are older. Read the following thread - it has information on why you should wait.

Take all that money you were willing to spend on AAS on a diet coach. I recommend 3J here. He has helped many guys achieve exactly what you are hoping yo achieve. He is a whole lot cheaper and safer. You will find his ad to the right of your screen.

I plan to wait till I'm 23, but wanted to start learning as much as possible now. Also, I have worked with strength coaches and have been able to make strength gains but only while I'm in a decent surplus where I'm putting on about 4 pounds a month. Naturally, 4 pounds a month obviously leads to a good amount of fat gain along with muscle. I'm just sick of being fat while bulking and it affects me very negatively mentally.

EDIT: sorry for the double post.

You should wait until age 25. Read the information in the thread I linked for you. And get a diet coach.

What is your body fat %?

Get off the hair loss meds too. They are known to lower your testosterone levels. Sometimes pretty severely.

At the doses I'm using, it hasn't had any affect on my gains. I researched them pretty well before I got on them. My bf% is about 11-12% right now. I started this bulk at 7-8% which is the bf% I feel happy/good at. I tend to store a lot of my fat in my face which can be annoying, going from an attractive face to a moonface.

As for the diet coach.. I have a B.S. in nutritional science and track all my food on a daily basis. I know exactly how many calories I need to put on however much amount of weight or lose however much amount of weight. The problem is I hate passing the single digit bodyfat % which is almost unavoidable while bulking naturally for the majority of people.

Even bulking with AAS will put fat on you. That is why guys run a bulk cycle and then do a cut afterwards. Diet is still going to dictate what happens while using AAS.

I agree being in a surplus you will put on some BF but I can minimize this fat gain while being in a smaller surplus. I can do that naturally also, but then my strength gains slow down drastically and even halts at points. Whereas if I were on AAS, I could make that surplus smaller and my strength gains wouldn't take as much of a hit.
