Post Workout Nutrition - The Gainer

I read in the "bulking" thread that your post workout shake should contain 40-50g's of protein and double that in carbs. The obvious way to achieve this is by using a weight gainer protein shake. I've been using a normal shake and adding an egg or two and a few scoops of peanut butter to add to them. I usually take 2 through the day, one PWO, and a double sccop (25g protein per sccop) before bed.

I went through 5lbs of bsn's True Mass and it put a few pounds on me however I feel like almost every pound went straight to my spare tire. On top of that it's hard to find a good gainer that isn't pure sugar and shit. So I guess my questions are:

Are gainers best to take post workout? If so what are some solid products that don't contain pure shit and mix decently?
