melting point tests can be inaccurate in a home lab unless you have capillary tubes and a good set up. You can do a pretty good melt point test without those but most people do it incorrectly. The melt point test is not an effective way of determining purity of a sample. I think the closest thing for identifying purity would be a mass spec
