Squats

Squats are supposed to be the grand daddy of all leg exercises, and I am one that believes this. Well I have 5 bodybuilding video on my computer (Ronnie Coleman - The Unbelievable, Dorian Yates - blood and Guts, Kevin Levrone- Full Blown, Lee Priest - Another Blond Myth, and Jay Cutler - A Cut above) and I have only seen Ronnie do squats in their leg training. Are there certain benefits of the leg press that we are overlooking?

Well you have to realize that all of them squated when they were younger but as they turned pro and progressed they switched to leg press to avoid injury.

You can get away with a variety of foot placements ,where as with squats this is not possible .As far as which is better I,m not sure ...anyone ?

Without a doubt there is probably no better excercise for building mass on the legs than the squat!!!! I also love lunges, even though they suck, nothing like falling over with 75lb dumbells in each hand.....LOL

I'd like to hear more info about leg presses myself!!!!!!!!! Never really been into them much....

Squats are the best and harder than Leg Press because you have to stabalize and get every muscle fiber involved to balance the weight but Leg Press are much safer and allow more concentration on the form and TUT (Time under Tension) you can also use more weight more safely which as we all know allows one of the seven grandaddy principles to take place (Progressive overload) For Example I can Leg Press 520 pounds but I can only squat 200 with perfect form. I personally don't like Squats because I am taller and that leaves me wanting to bend forward more. Also like someone said about Dorian Yates switching to Leg Press because of hip problems he did that because you are supposed to keep your knees in line with your toes and not allow them to shift back and forth which places stress on the hips and lower back and with the Leg Press you can look at your form and concentrate much better we all know to keep our heads up when squatting. I have alot of personal trainer friends that don't use squats at all for clients and these guys have trained a Mr. Universe and clients like this. I beleive the magazines love to toss this subject back and forth because it leaves alot of space for debate and debate sells magazines. This isn't just me talking this is straight from Frederick C. Hatfield's book (Dr. Squat) "Fitness the complete guide."

u might try to fuck the tempo up . i mean when u leg press with whatever weight take it down moderate but when u blast out of the hole don't go slow !!!!! thats right fight your bodies urge to get away from the pain !!!!

Oh and another tidbit for ya. A study was done to see the difference in muscle stimulation at different stopping points of the squat using the same weight at all points i.e. parallel to the floor near parallel partial squats. It was done using EMG (electromyography). The results shown that the only difference in depths was more involvement of the gluteus maximus but the stress on the quads and hamstrings were the same throughout. So for the guys that say partial reps with heavy wieght are useless I say give them a try.

Like others have said I think they all used to do them but once their legs got big enough they can maintain them w/o doing squats.

I agree with tempo change nosocks. Our body is insanely adaptable to everything we do so tempo change is a good way to mix things up. Charles Paquin is big on tempo. And then you have the added chains, rubberbands, and ballistic training that helps.

I think squats are so great for beginners because their balance and coordination is so off hence the stabilizizer muscles. I have my beginning clients do staggered squats and that really gets them good.

i quess with my limited knowledge , and the shows i have been to . it seems people still lack wheels !!!!!!!sure everbody ngot good arms , chest, back but not everyone has wheels that are ripped o yah some have great size but some are sooth like (stone colds abs) easy just a joke

I agree there are the pussies in the gym writing novels as they do Leg Presses are what gives these exercises bad names.
