This is part of the reason the military ditched the xm8 rifle. They were waiting for a more signifigant leap forward in technology to make the switching costs more worthwhile.

They have finished the belt fed squad support gun and are now working on a standard issue rifle. It uses new ammo 40-50% lighter and smaller with all the power of current 5.56 ammo. The gun is also lighter and has ultra low recoil because it is mechanically absorbed in the gun.

wow, i've heard of this... but smaller than a 5.56??? im assuming they used the same deal like they did to develop the new ammo for the m16's that has the power of a 7.62.. this is like the little brother to the M249 SAW lol!!!! i want one for my truck lol. i'll be looking for these at the field!
