Using protein shakes as meal replacements?

Hey all,

Title says it all, we're all guilty of using protein shakes as meal replacements BUT... we are often told not to do this an old saying is 'powder is good, but food is better.'

Now this confuses me because when looking at the biological value of certain proteins Whey is right at the top even above whole eggs. Biological value (BV) is a measure of the proportion of absorbed protein from a food which becomes incorporated into the proteins of the organism's body. It summarises how readily the broken down protein can be used in protein synthesis in the cells of the organism.

So surely with this in mind whey protein is MORE effective than food? So my question is... why is this not so?

artificial vs natural?? i dunno really :(

shakes = convenience, ready to go thing, easier absorption

whole food = takes longer, heavy on the stomach, tires your mouth from chewing :p

never replace whole food nutrition with shakes. always have them both :)

at least imo

Mainly because whole foods require the body to work. They need to break down the foods which helps increase your metabolism and it feeds the body longer. Gives the body a steady supply of fuel and energy.

Get it?

It's more than just protein. Protein powders lack the vitamins and nutrients that real food does. The nutritional panel may be somewhat impressive, but there's no getting away from the fact that the powder is artificial. Also, whey gets absorbed a lot faster than protein from real food. This makes it good for post workout, but sub-optimal for other time periods.

There's a lot more involved in building muscle/protein synthesis than just biological value.

If you can avoid shakes, whole food is a lot better ore nutritional value other than protein like mentioned above
