I uderstand the whole concept of using your BMR to adjust your calories ni order to gain weight, but does this work in reverse.

Using your BMR isn't very accurate. Unless you lay around in bed all day doing nothing, you're going to be burning a lot more calories than this. You can use fitday.com and add in what you do during the day for work, and also add in activities. That would be the most accurate way to do it. And yes, it works in reverse. Just don't drop calories too low or you'll lose muscle. Good luck.
