2 a days

So i got a buddy who is starting 2 a days tomorrow. i did this in high school for football but that was just because it was mandatory. lol
my question is, is this over training? he said he is gonna focus on one or 2 muscle groups a day like he always has, but in the mornings he is going to do light weight with high reps, and evening workout will be low reps with heavy weight. good or bad idea? he is shady and never admits he is on cycle until his cycle is over so not a clue if he is on cycle right now.
 
i am no professional but i told him it sounded like it was over training, but he said he likes it and grows best this way. idk. he does put on clean mass quickly, but he has just been working out for about a year. off and on until about 2 months ago. idk if people r just different or if he is crazy
