Cardio and Energy ?

I am banned!
When I used to do moderate runs back in the day on a empty stomach the one thing I noticed was a BIG energy boost for the rest of my day. Not sure if its because of the accumulated muscle mass or if I am just lazy but I prefer intervals now. But my question is what is happening on the hormonal level that created such a rise in energy? Is this because of the rise in cortisol from a long run?
