Continuing TRT out of the country

Within a year I will be a Registered nurse and intend to get into traveling nursing. It's always been an interesting desire of mine to go over to Ireland and live for a time, mainly because my recent ancestors were immigrants and I've always seen this heritage as important. That and I feel they can't shun me too much my last name being O'Brien and all..lol.

I'm not concerned with obtaining a work visa, as this is usually doable with some sort of health care certification, and I know there is a need for such positions..but what I'm most concerned about is my own health care when I get over there. Currently I'm on a good testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) protocol with a good doc of 3 years. My health's a little rocky at the moment, but nothing I won't soon have figured out. I don't know how testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) works over there and I don't know if there would be any willing and competent physicians over there to take over my testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for me.

I'm also a little unsure on how insurance would exactly work, and if wherever I was employed would cover me. I mean again, this isn't a necessity, just something I would really, really like to do. Probably not even permanently. Nothing against America, I love it here, but I've never really left the bordering states of Iowa. I really would like to just get out and experience things beyond cornfields and prairies.

Hopefully someone knows something about this.

I can only chime in on the insurance part of your question as I've dealt with three companies during my testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) protocol. The answer is: It's up to the insuring company on their policies and determination of your "disease". My current insurance company Aetna is HORRIBLE and they will only cover office visits. They REFUSE to cover anything else remotely related even though I've jumped through all of their hoops. This is the complete opposite of how United Healthcare worked as they were pushing more meds on me to keep me healthy. I do know that a lot of it has to do with how your doctor diagnoses you and if there is anything that the beancounters can deny you coverage for. As it's an existing condition, you're kind of at their mercy.

That's about all the insight I have on this, hopefully someone else can help you out with your other questions! Ireland is such beautiful country, I too would like to go there someday as I have Irish (well, Scots-Irish) blood flowing through my veins. Good luck! :)

I'm not sure how that all really gets sorted, but I'm assuming if I'm there on a work visa I'll get some sort of benefit plan. I'm getting pretty far ahead of myself though lol. I still need to finish school.

Never hurts to plan ahead! Benefits will depend on the employer, so that's something only time can really tell imo.

you should probably also check the regulations of transporting in and out the states as well as the point of destination. I am sure there are some laws that could get you into a sticky situation. But a lot of it is going to depend on your employers insurance. My bet is they would rather stock you up on it in the states and go from there if your employers insurance is from the states, I just dont see an american bases carrier willing to stock you abroad on a medication unless it was life saving.. But I am sure if your company works internationally they have an insurance carrier that is privy to these things.

Thanks guys. I don't know why but I have this need to get out of America..lol. Nothing against it, I just need to see the world, and quite frankly I don't want to be here over the next decade. I don't like the direction we're heading but that's a discussion for another time I suppose. If the Ireland thing turns out to be too difficult, there's always Canada! I enjoy colder whether and if I ever gained citizenship, FREE HEALTH CARE..at the low low cost of a 50% federal taxation rate..lol. Decisions..I have about a year left to make them.

Good luck and be sure to weigh all options, the grass always seems greener on the other side of the fence until its your grass. One thiing is whatever you do if your traveling abroad with the stuff I would not risk non legit stuff and ensure you have the persription tag on all meds.

Damn..so true, but I'm pretty sure Ireland's grass is the greenest in the world ;) lol, or at least greener than Iowa's..which is dead half the year. I'm pretty good at keeping all my prescription meds labeled and accounted for, have been all throughout college through numerous dorm inspections, so I don't have any worries there!
