which would you recommend for a beginner or for overall joint health? barbell exercises or dumbell

Barbell!......why?.....form..
As a beginner form is critical....presses ,curls ,flat bench...etc

- as was posted above they both work great and for a beginner worry about form, full rom.
- u can just cycle between them

Dumbell, just about every beginner has a side that is much more dominant strength wise, and a host of other imbalances, that need to be straightened out.

I'm a big fan of dumbells for various reasons. Because of the additional stabilizing involved, they promote balance not only of the different sides of the body, but of the strength ratios between the large muscles targetted and the smaller helper muscles and joint tissues involved. Practically speaking, that means less injury prone. Also, dumbells tend to show higher EMG activity on the targetted muscles in studies. Finally, dumbell training strength increases have been shown to have the greatest transferrence to the actual upper body movements involved in the more common sports.

For overall joint health I would suggest dumbells...I suggest these because it places less tension on the wrists and for other exercises, the elbows. Dumbells also allow more movement, allowing the muscles and joints to warm up better than if using a barbell.
