Fat Kid
There is an older gentleman at my gym and we were talking about protien intake. We argued friendly for 20 minutes. He says the absolute most your body can process at one sitting is 25g. So 25g x 6 meals a day is only 150g. I told him I shoot for double that. He goes on about how I am wasting my time and killing my kidneys blah blah blah. Can you guys help me explain to him that 1g per pound of body weight is maintenence and weighing in at about 250 I need 300+ to grow.

Positive nitrogen retention, its science not just some bullcrap. The absolute most you can process is 25g? I'd like to see the last time science really looked at bodybuilders and protein intake, and said that they actually took in too much for thier muscle mass.

What protein is not used is excreted, very little is converted to fat stores, a benefit of protein caloric intake versus increasing calories elsewhere.

Drink water, kidneys will be fine. Protein induces a very slight dehydration effect, he probably doesn't know why people think its bad for the kidneys and is just spouting off crap.

You dont need to prove anything to someone who is closed minded, I go into the gym and I talk to a few people now and then but its brief. If they are ignorant, let them stay that way if they choose not to be open minded.

So ask him this:

When you eat a 16 oz steak, is 75% of the protein just wasted?

Ask him how humans survived if this were true.

Seriously, that number was probably amino acids or something like that, which hit the bloodstream immediately. Meat does not, and takes hours to digest. So you have 8+ hours of slow release amino acids. Meat is not applicable to the number he gave since it's not digested in "one sitting".

IMO, the number is probably 100% BS because it doesn't take into account weight (100 lb person uses the same as a 280 lb person??), or activity level (a couch potato uses the same as a power lifter??). It doesn't take into account what type of protein, and I believe someone once said that the actual time period of this number is 1-2 hours. Only whey is digested that fast, so the number is totally useless regardless of the other questions about it's validity.

Total agree with frosty - 25g is the maximum the 'average' man can absorb from one meal (can't remember when i last met average man), but doesn't account viscosity of digesta etc... i.e bulker food take longer to pass and therefore more protein can be absorbed over time. Anyway the bigger you are, the greater ammount of gut is physically present, with more receptors for amino acid transport. Testosterone will also affect uptake of amino acids from the gut, if you supplement with tribulus, prohormones, steroids (whatevers your flavour) can increase your base rate of absorbion to 150-200%. If your body needs it it'll do its damnest to get it.
