Ideal # of sets per body part?

What would you guys/gals say would be the ideal range of sets per body part for building muscle? Lets' assume we're making every rep count and warming up thoroughly. I usually like to hit each muscle group with 3 sets of 3 different exercises, totalling 9 sets. I usually keep the reps between 8 -12 per set. Is 9 too many or not enough?
 
Everyone's body is different. Try high reps, low reps, high sets, low sets. Just find what works best for your body and go with it.
 
I know everyone's body is different, but there are certain physiological principles that pretty much apply to everyone. Varying frequency and volume slightly may not have much affect, but varying it greatly might have a profound negative effect. I would logically think that going from 9 sets to 11 and from 8 reps to 12 wouldn't offer any negative consequences, but going from 9 sets to 16 and from 8 reps to 26 would. I'm just asking...how many sets and reps do you guys perform on average, yielding good progressive gains.
