The "quick" method (based on total bodyweight)

A fast and easy method to determine calorie needs is to use total current body weight times a multiplier.

Fat loss = 12 - 13 calories per lb. of bodyweight
Maintenance (TDEE) = 15 - 16 calories per lb. of bodyweight
Weight gain: = 18 - 19 calories per lb. of bodyweight

NOw I am 6' 243pounds and have a BF of about 17.5%. According to this I need to eat 2916 calories a day to lose weight.

I think it depends on the individual entirely. I went from 305 to 270 (all fat loss) eating about 3200 kcals a day.

oh, i was cycling at the time. that might be important info.

Those guidelines are good to use as a basis, but you need to figure it out for yourself usually. I take whatever number that gives me and use that for a week or so, if I'm not gaining/cutting or whatever I'm trying to do, then I adjust as I go.
