Opinions on dropping protein shakes completely?

Talking to a few of my friends who are pretty serious competitors for the Ontario provincials this year and listening to some of the pros, what are your opinions on this statement.

"Protein shakes are completely unnecessary if you are hitting all your macros with only food, which you should be doing anyway".

Looking for ways to save money and spend more on research chemicals.

Thoughts?

I haven't used protein shakes for almost a year. Admittedly, they're convenient but I've been doing good without them.

If you're hitting your macros, I agree. However, I tend to use protein shakes to hit my daily caloric intake in general. When I'm using a fat burner or a pre-workout, it really crushes the appetite, so I find protein shakes really helpful in those instances, but if you're hitting your macros, including overall caloric intake through food, then it's all good, imo.

I agree ..
I see protein shakes use is limited to:
1- after a workout , fast digesting protein is a good idea.
2- casein b4 bed time
3- to complete ur daily protein intake to hit ur total macros.

I believe real lean protein is always better

They should not replace food but post workout they are dam handy. Liquid protein that digests fast........tough to beat.

U could swap liquid egg whites instead but that's pretty fucking sick to drink everyday.

Actually a good quality whey isolate is superior to whole foods in terms of amino acid profile.. They're extremely high in bcaa which is what increase protein synthesis. At first i thought whole foods are better, but after doing some research studies have shown whey isolate to be superior.. Advantage of whole foods are the thermic effect and feeling fuller, so on a restricted caloric intake whole food are better because you'll not be as hungry as if you were to drink a shake.

Agreed. In terms of desiring protein for sole protein sake, you can't beat Whey, but for general nutritional benefits, whole foods are superior, as whole foods contain a host of nutrients protein shakes do not.

Combination of whole foods and shakes are fine IMO. The bioavailability of whey is higher than most foods you eat (and even higher with isolate and hydro whey).

That being said....IIFYM and you're eating clean whole foods I don't see the problem with using whey - it's just not economical for me to eat 300g of protein from whole food lol

Yeah I try to get the bulk of my protein from lean meats/fish and egg whites/eggs. It can be hard to put down 300-350g of protein every day just from food though. I supplement with whey to build muscle 2-3 times a day to get those extra amino's in. But you certainly could go without whey if you got enough protein in with food.

I typically take in between 50-75 grams of whey/casein protein a day but have taken a week off here and there and switched to BCAAs such as USP Labs Miconized BCAAs which is mostly luceine and a glutamine compound. I ususally take 10-20grams of BCAAs daily when doing this which comes out to about to shakes. hope this helps a little

I couldn't afford eating good quality meat 5-7 times a day. Nor do I have the time to cook.

Your buddies are exactly right but shit son, I got a life to live and body building is only maybe 20% of it. I'm into cars, women and wakeboarding as well. And on Friday night I tip a few back.

So u really have to assess where ur at, where ur going and what's important to u. Those guys are big time bb-ers, so yea, for them dropping shakes is nothing.
