I just found out that I am 283 lbs from my doctor......I hopefully am going to be starting P90x soon and going to the gym.I am going to try to incorporate some weightlifting along with the program to increase calories burned a day and speed up fat loss. I hopefully will be hitting the gym 5 times a week to turn what I can into muscle and doing the P90x how it says. I am changing up my diet hopefully for good. I am looking to lose 80lbs or more and any advice on these things about the critique would help..

Try posting a ballpark current diet for yourself and we can go from there. Also lay out your planned workout routine and we'll take a look.

P90X is great for cardio, fat loss and general conditioning.

Here's some advise before you start. Don't be discouraged if do not finish the very first video workout or the second or third, fourth...!

Do the best you can on each dvd, next day next video, do the best you can and so and so on! It will take a good amount of time before a beginner can complete an entire dvd.
You will shed weight though like crazy, as I said do what you can and down the road you will reap the benefits.

I'll tell you from personal experience P90x and the gym 5 days a week is going to be hard...the P90x will kick your ass and then on top of it going to the gym your going to be tired as hell, also if you follow the diet on p90x it's expensive as hell to shop for it but if you have the money you can google a shopping list.
Good luck bro let me know how it goes.

Ninpo is spot on. If you're going to do P90x, forget the gym, it ain't going to happen. P90x gets a lot of greif on BB boards and its true, you're not going to build a lot of muscle doing it. That said, it is a pretty good program to get you "in shape" and it is physically demanding. You're just not going to have enough left in the tank for proper weight training. In fact, I would say if you were to try, you would be setting yourself up for injury by overtraining. The exception being if you are already in top physical condition, which I am assuming you are not.

If your goal is to shed some lbs, it is a good program. My advice would be to just follow it, including the diet and make sure you are eating enough! Also, I would advise you be careful with a lot of the jumping workouts. They can be pretty hard on your knees. So make sure the flooring you are doing it on is very forgiving and/or you skip those portions. Its not worth a knee injury. Good luck and have fun with it.
