how can craig biggio's 3000th hit be counted a hit when he was thrown out at second? thanks

I didn't see it but if you hit the ball, round first and get caught trying to turn a hit into a double it still gets recorded as a hit (a single). and if getting caught at third trying to turn a hit into a triple it's a double. not sure if it gets recorded for or against your on base percentage, I'd guess against.
