What do you guys think is a better overall meal, a meal replacement shake or a solid meal?

I mean a calorie is a calore, protien is protien, a carbs a carb, etc...

Will the body use solid food better than a quality shake???

The thermogenic effect of the body having to break down the solid foods compared to shakes is one good reason.

its pretty common knowledge that whole foods are better. There are nutrients in real food that arent there in powders or MRPs. Its even believed that nutrients such as calcium from natural sources such as dairy are more useful than in pill form.

That said, powders are better than no food at all.

I agree there are some thermogenic effects and there might be better vitamins and minerals in whole food, but from a calorie prospective they are equal. Therefore for those of us trying to gain mass, can substitute MRPs for whole food.

Again, a calorie is a calorie!

your program or whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish should certainly not rely on supplements, instead supplements should “supplement” an already great program. Whole food bro. later.

soo if i eat 1000 calories of lard
vs. 1000 calories of chicken..

ill look the same?

First of all...In what respect?

A shake (whey) is every bit as good as a chicken breast, minus the dead animal part. The body will certainly not use whole food "better" than a shake. Whole food is NOT always better than shakes. Especially post workout. There are so many variables to consider that the question has 1000 answers and thier all correct. Its all perception, one is solid and one is liquid.

yea, 100 calories from oatmeal is the same as 100 calories from fruit loops.

HUH? im not saying youre wrong, but if i remember what ive studied on...you have 9 Kcals for every 1gm of fat, 7 kcal for every 1gm. of alcohol, and 4 kcals for every 1gm of carbohydrate and protein.
Therefore, if you had say a pack of fruit snacks consisting of mainly carbs and sugar alcohols you would be getting all of your kcals from carbs...

which would be around 30gms of carbs x 4 kcal/gram = 120 kcal from carbs.

On the other hand, if you eat a chunk of chocolate that has 11g of fat and saaaay 5g of carbs you would have...

11g of fat x 9 kcals/gram=99 kcals...+ 5g of carbohydrates x 4 kcal/gram =20 kcals and roughtly 120 kcals total as well.

This would give you 120 kcals for both the pack of fruit snacks and the chunk of chocolate...BUT wouldnt this make their calories somewhat different? So in my mind, the calories from a piece of chicken and the calories from a large fry are different. I know a calorie is a calorie is a calorie...but wouldnt this in effect make some difference in the calories you consume? just wondering. peace

how bout 1000 calories of di*k?

you mised the point...

Lets use a balanced whole meal (500 cals) and a balanced MRP (500 cals). They are COPLETELY EQUAL from a calorie perspective, therefore could be equally substituted when you count up the cals. A combonation of both might be the best choice, but the bottom line is they are calorie-wise the same and they will yield the same mass result.

The only time a liqud protein is better than whole food is post workout.

There is a reason that those on ckd diets dont live off of protein shakes.
and liquid fats..

That body will utilize the nutrients better.

For about 2 years I was drinking 3 mrp's a day as part of my diet..My results
were medicore

Only when i switched to taking in more whole foods did i see better results.

Look at the diets of the pros's..they live off of whole foods and
use mrps as supplement......cuz thats what they are ..supplements

I would love to see anyone live off of 5000 calories a day
taken only from shakes for a month...and thats all they have..

I would love to see their results..vs. someone who takes in
5000 calories of good clean whole foods

I don't know the science behind it, but I have observed that the big guys tend to eat real food and perhaps supplement with a whey protein shake.

Right or wrong, I use whey protein shakes as a food supplement.

I would love to see the results too bro, its the only way to find out!

As someone said already, perception. By comparing a huge steak and potatoes to a MRP shake (both equal in balanced quality calories) one would automatically assume that the steak n' taters will be better for mass. Wrong, they are both a blend of protein/carbs/fats where the body will not know the difference.

And to use your example I guarantee someone would grow more on 4500 calories from only MRPs then someone getting 4000 calories all from whole foods...

From what i just heard on this radio show is that its best to get a protein shake before and after workout no more than 30 minutes so that the protein rushes to those sites that you are working.

But rather what the guy is saying a healthy cal=a healthy cal one is no different than the other either in liquid form or food form... i guess.
