Squatting to focus on glutes, best method?

I've heard a couple different opinions, just not exactly sure so wanted to make a thread.

If when squatting, you want to hit your glutes as much as possible, do you do that with:

1) when you come back up, making sure to pelvic push forward and squeeze your glutes
2) squatting very deep, past horizontal
3) other...
??

These both seem to somewhat make sense, just wondering your guys opinions to clear this dilemma up for me.

I like slightly lower than parallel, wide stance box squatting. I sit back on the box like i am sitting down in a chair. Then hip flexion to lead out of the hole. It makes my ass hurt like a blackout drunk night at a gay bar in San Fran...
 
For me the best way to hit glutes while squatting is with a narrow stance, and squat deep! you will find you get a crazy stretch at the bottom and squat with a weight you can control 100% on the way up allowing you to get a good contraction and squeeze at the top.
