starting weight

I am planning on starting one of the hardgainer routines that IA has laid out on his site but I'm not quite sure where to set my starting weights. I asked over on his forum and only got one response that said to start near my maxes. In my mind this doesn't make much sense because it doesn't allow you to progress far before you hit a wall from bumping the weight up. Anybody here use one of those routines? Where did you set your starting weights? I'd like to train in the 8-12 rep range, once I'm able to get 12, I'd bump the weight up and start over at 8 reps. Does that sound right? Thanks in advance guys
