try this here

I posted this in the womans forum, but no one has replied yet, thought maybe I would try my luck here.

I have been seeing this girl for awhile now, we get along very well, alot do to the fact that we both enjoy training and everything that comes with it.

She is 23 about 5'8 140lbs. She is in very good shape, but she also trains none stop.(something we argue about). She has this tendency to put on muscle VERY easily. Her diet is good, and she has tried different types of training such as circuit training, high reps, more sets. But she also runs for an hour on average about 6 days a week.

We have tried to alter her diet accordingly, but she is also afraid of too much protein do to the ease of hypertrophy she can attain quickly. What I recommended she try was to eat carbs only first thing in the morning and pre-workout, and try to get the rest of her calories from protein and healthy fats. But I told her before she try this I would consult some females who actually know what they are talking about. which is why I have come to you.

Can you girls recommend some type of program that will help tone up as oppose to put muscle mass on?

And when she does take a break here and there she pack on weight quickly as well. And I am out of suggestions, I thank you for your time and any opinions you might have.

Why do you feel she has to be eating protein???

She would do just fine probably at 150g / day or 30g / meal (5 meals)

She can easily make the rest of kcals with some good fats and carbs.

The only way her program is going to work is if she buys into it and does it.

Thanks for the input.....She is quite determined and persistent, and over the last 6 years has tried various routines, she has seen a couple personal trainers and wasted her money. I agree about the diet, but could you recommend any type of routine that might be beneficial to suit her needs?

Workout will have very little IMO to her overall results.

The overall diet and cardio program will be what does the work. Find a good trainer

thats like saying you want to lose bodyfat, but not lower the amount of fat you have on your body.

they are the same thing.

I think a lot of people use the term tone to mean get defined.

I'm sorry, but can you clarify what her goals are? This statement kind of makes it sound like she doesn't want to build additional muscle mass. If so, then that is fine. Is she primarily a cardio athelete?

I've noticed that endurance cardio athletes put a lot of hours and days/week into training. Obviously, overtraining is a concern for them too, but I also realize that endurance cardio is not the same as bodybuilding or powerlifting.

Just to add my personal point of view for no apparent reason, I do like muscle on women and I dislike that many women don't want too much muscle mass because of appearence. IMHO, unless they are taking steroids, they aren't going to bulk up too much. Now if they don't want the muscle mass because of some other reason, then that is a different story. I guess I just kind of feel like many men say, "I don't like a woman that has muscles that are too big" when they should really be saying, "I don't like a woman that has muscles that are too big because she'll be bigger than me and it makes me feel like less of a man." I personally have no interest in scrawy anorexic women so that I can feel more manly around them.

as far as i know, getting "toned" means building enough muscle to have shape, but without being bulky. I dunno if that qualifies as "defined", or it losing bodyfat qualifies as "defined".
