If you do give flowers though, do it in a non-tacky way i.e. remove the damn plastic from around them or go to a professional florist. There is nothing wrong with picking up flowers from a grocery store, as long as they are not presented in the cheap ass, tacky, "grocery store flowers" trim
If you want to do roses, expect to pay fully 200-500% the regular price of roses because of the holiday. Who says price gouging is illegal :\
If you don't want to blow your entire V-Day wad on roses and you live in a large enough town, you can get Sweet Peas or Lillies of the Valley. They are by far the best smelling flowers out there and they won't be in as high demand during valentine's day. If you go to a florist and ask for these and they don't know what they are, walk out immediately and find another florist. If you can't find anyone who has them, you can settle for Stargazer Lillies, as they also have a very good smell and are also very, very pretty.
Presentation is a big part of it as well. I generally give flowers wrapped in colored tissue paper (either green or colored to match the flowers) because I like to watch the girlie run around looking for a vase to put them in and fretting over them etc etc. If you give them already in a vase they generally get set down and become a part of the room until they die.
But the ladies are right, it is very hard to screw up flowers. Just try to be an original with whatever you do. Don't just settle for a wad of roses and baby's breath etc. Mix it up a little bit. Anyone can buy a bunch of preselected and prearranged flowers, but it says a whole lot more if you pick them out and arrange them yourself (with the help of a woman or florist if you are flower retarded
).
