I am new to this site. I would like to know the best way to lose weight. I am 6'1 285lbs. I am an ex football player and can't seem to get back down to the 225 lb. range. What are the best things to do to speed up my metabolism?

You can't really just "speed" it up, right off the bat, and just sit there and expect your body to burn the excess fat off. You could try multiple things, you could get a diet and do cardio, along with some fatloss supplements, or steriods! I'd advice the diet and cardio, then get some supplements and if you must, steriods/GH. Try making a cutting diet, and doing some HIIT (http://www.musclemedia.com/training/hiit.asp)!

move to ethiopia jj :( sorry that was wrong

i think diet and good training would be your best bet... you have to be consistent with your diet.. and don't expect to lose all the weight in a short period of time..

setting goals is good :)

Change your eating habits to make your body process fat as the primary fuel source. Increase your protein and watch your carbs.

There are a number of other options, but this is the way to start.

The 2 biggest things that drive up your metabolism are eating and exercise.

Here are some guidelines:

Drink plenty of water (1-2 gallons per day)
Eat plenty of protein (1.0 - 1.5 grams per lb of bodyweight)
Restrict carb intake and eat primarily low GI carbs (ie vegetables)
Eat good fats and don't drop fats too low. If you eat fat with low carbs you will train you metabolism to be a fat-burning machine.
Eat every 3 hours.
Avoid alcohol. No matter how great you diet is, this will sabotage all your efforts.

If you're already active and in decent cardiovascular shape, then diet is the best thing. It really depends on your goals. I went from 265 to 205 in about 5 months and still looked like a pudgy fat kid after dropping 60lb's. Then I started lifting hard and lost another 25lbs but totally reshaped my physique. Now, I'm just trying to lean out like a mofo to hit 5% BF. if you just want to drop poundage, DIET is the only way to go. If you want to reshape your body, DIET/WEIGHTS/CARDIO is the only way.

I agree. Try the Keto diet bro. Ull melt that fat rite off. (and some muscle)

The best method to lose weight is simply CUTTING THE CALORIES. That is the only way you'll lose fat and keep most of your muscle. All these fad diets are a waste of time. Atkins for example is a joke.

First thing you need to do is find your maintanance calories. Use this:

Method II - This is a method that calculates your basal metabolic rate, based on your height, weight and age. You expend energy no matter what you are doing, even when sleeping. Thus your Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories you'd burn if you stayed in bed all day - that's my kind of day!

Women: 661 + (4.38 x weight in pounds) + (4.33 x height in inches) - (4.7 x age) = BMR
Men: 67 + (6.24 x weight in pounds) + (12.7 x height in inches) - (6.9 x age)= BMR

Lets take a 200 pound male who is 22 and is 5-10.

67 + (6.24 x 200) + (12.7 x 70) - (6.9 x 22) - ( 6.9 x 22 ) = 1986

Next you need to calculate your activity level for the day by multiplying your BMR x's the following number that suites you.

1.2-1.3 = Very Light

1.5 for Moderate -

1.6-1.7 for Heavy -

1.8-2.1 for Insanely Rigorous -

If his energy expenditure is moderate than I would multiply 1986 by 1.5 and get 2,979 calories to maintain his current bodyweight weight.

Next keep track of everything you eat preferably on a site such as fitday.com. It will track all your calories for the day so there is no guesswork needed. By cutting calories by as little as 100 calories below your maintanace you will definately lose fat.

Shit if thats the case then 3,188cal is my maintnance, now I know for a fact that if I ate 3,188cal ED I will get fat

mmmm Jynx i dont know if i would call it a waste of time. Pics dont lie brother. With a nice low carber last year i went from 14% to 6-7% in 3 months. I think it all depends on the person and u just have to find what works best for u...

Pics r in the member pics section if u want to check for yourself...

Jynx, I am gonna have to go with Fina on this one. as popi said also, the eqn you put up is a general guideline, I am saying this as a person with a degree in Excercise Physiology and a minor in sports nutrition. I have dropped from an all time high of 250 to a wt of 195 in the past, and if I was taking in 3000 + calories it never would had happened. Diet is really an individual thing and it takes trial and error

3500 cal a week

if you do nothing but work on diet you have to cut 3500 cal a week to loose 1lb of fat. thats 500 a day. cardio and weight can change this you just loose it faster. this past fall i cut 7000 cal a week out of my diet and did cardio hard 2 times a day and i lost 28 lbs in about 2 months. it works good luck
