What supplements do you want?

I'm thinking about opening a store... what products would you want at your store? Brands help... but not needed. Protein Bars, Proteins, Supplements, CEE, whatever.

Awesome aProtege! Are you considering opening a store online or where you live? If you're really going to want to make money, then you're going to have to appeal to us guys, but also the "wanna be's", because their are many. I personally never buy protein bars....

The money it costs to compete online is crazy... I've talked to reps and the amount of stock someone like bodybuilding.com buys bring their retail and my wholesale at similar costs. Most of you guys will prob never walk in a store unless you have a friend that works there or you need a small tub of protein until your next order arrives. The market I'm aiming at is your avg consumer and wannabes that generally go into GNC. The difference with my store is quality advice and a knowledgeable staff.

While it would be nice to see some of the big guys, I understand what it cost for food/protein/supplements and every penny saved is well worth it.

Its a tough market and where you see the most money is with the elderly who are tired of being handed prescriptions for everything when really its about nutritional balance and making changes in diet to see results in health.

You're right on about the "probably never walk in...". Quality advice would've been so great to have in the beginning. Their are so many kids working at these GNC's that have NO CLUE what's going on! I'm definitely in favor of this business, but then again, no risk for me.

so all money a side... if you had a store on the corner of your street what would you like it to have.

Most of your customers are going to come in and ask for what they see in the magazines. FLEX, Muscle & Fitness, and etc. Thats when you can steer them away from from those products and show them the other high quality lines out there, that has a higher profit margin for you. A buddy of mine managed a GNC, and just opened his own store. He carries the normal EAS, Optimum, Muscle Tech, big name companies along with high quality/inexpensive American Whey, Sci-Tech, and Sci Fit. He no longer has overhead telling him to push certain products for the good of GNC.

open a max muscle franchise. i work at one and we train all our employees to be certified sports nutrition specialist's, max muscle has some great products and we also carry lots of thrid party products

Like mentioned.

Stock all the shit that you see in the BBing magazines

Thats what im working on right now... anyone have suggestions for cheaper comparable brands? Im thinking about bagging TP and selling it to consumers. Its priced so that I can mark it up 30% and still be less then competitors. We shall see.

People that shop at the mall don't want TP brand.

They want Muscle-Tech and Optimum Nutrition because that's what the people in the magazines sell.

As well, stock up on every fat loss gimmick for all the lazy people.

Sorta smart approach. Too bad you don't have the same level of thoughts when it comes to NCAAF.

Don't compete with GNC or even the other nutrition stores out there. Instead, compete with Whole Foods, Safeway and CVS. What I mean is, WOMEN are often uncomfortable going into a nutrition store. Instead, they wander the isles of poshy stores like Trader Joes looking for the healthy alternatives. Anyway...just another bad idea..up for your consideration.

I agree, most people won't want the TP, but I would! The brands and items in the magazines is a great approach at first. I would avoid items that go outdated quickly....

Two members of the staff will be women who have more knowledge on supplements then I do. We will be a competitors with health food stores. However it is very hard to compete with CVS and the like. People who shop for vitamins there are convenience consumers. Where as someone who would likely step into a health/nutrition store is going to be someone that has done some research or has some knowledge on the product. Otherwise its very hard to convince a person that a 5 dollar bottle is not the same as the 15 dollar bottle.

Just eat, you dont need that junk

Best of luck with this store. The only thing I ever buy are vitamins, zma, and amino acids, mostly arg and taur.

Walk into a GNC and take a quick mental note of everything you feel is important.

Make sure you carry, cleansing products, that people take to pass drug tests. you can mark it up 2 or 3 times cost if not more and people will still buy it because they need it to get jobs etc... also carry BSN, Fizogen, MuscleTech, MRI, Sci-Fit, American Whey protein, a protein by southern pharmacuticals, Universal, shaker cups, also get a wide variety of Vitamins, etc...
