What the proper set/rep range for any bodypart workout?

I normally do 5 sets of 10-12 reps, but is that is that over training the muscles? Is 5x5 better then 5x10-12?

There is no magic formula.
- Low rep range (4-8) is better for strength (Myofibril hypertrophy)
- Moderate rep range (10-12) is better for size (Sarcoplasmic hypertrophy)
- High rep range (20ish) is best for endurance.

I do 4 sets, and try to mix reps.. Something like this
12, 10, 8, 12
+-2 reps on each depending on how I feel,
 
When I was doing around 6 reps I had a pretty bulky look to me but since I started going my heaviest at 10 reps I've been getting really shredded so it's what your going for really. Strength or size
