Squats and bench press go a long way. I really suggest doing 3-5 reps rather than more if you are currently doing more. The 5x5 is one variation of this. I tend to get in 4 heavy sets of 5 reps myself. That might sound easy but with fewer reps you should be lifting heavier weight and getting 4 sets in can be exhausting as hell.
