Where does 'ology stand on IIFYM?

Waiting to die.
I come from a board that touts IIFYM as the be-all-end-all of dieting.

Basic principals are calories are calories and your body can't tell the difference for body composition purposes.
As long as you're hitting your macros/calories, it doesn't matter if you're getting in pizza/cookies every once in a while, your results will still be favorable.

I'm just curious where 'ology stands on this idea.

Really every diet should be considered an IIFYM diet. If you aren't hitting macros, you're doing it wrong. "Flexible dieting" as it used to be called, is a fine approach. It basically takes you away from the grilled chicken, broccoli, and brown rice diets. That being said, should you get all of your carbs from poptarts? No. Are poptarts ok to eat? Yes. You should be eating a balanced diet while hitting macros, and quick carbs do have their place.

I speak for myself and not any boards, and DCA is what IIFYM is based on. What it is really saying is to calculate energy based needs to your stats and goals, adjust macros so that you're getting at least the minimum of essential macros, and to generally choose whole and minimally processed foods for micronutrient sufficiency. Once your minimum needs have been met in regards to macros and micros, the differences will be negligible in body composition when you compare different macro sources like oats for carbs vs cereal or something.

Hah yep. It's the natural progression right?

I agree on that last part, based on my dealings over there people seem to be rather polar about it.
Some understand it isn't anything new and isn't the magic key to eating all the junk they want.
Others seem to be of the point of view that pop-tarts and the like are somehow catabolic.

Either way, the IIFYM threads over there are usually good for some "WTF" moments.

The majority of people over there have no idea what IIFYM really is, let alone how to diet. That site is full of trolls and nonlifters. Matt Ogus comes out with a video talking about IIFYM and everyone on bb.com loses their shit and runs to the store to buy ice cream and poptarts. It's really become just another fad diet like IF. Doc pretty much summed it up in a paragraph. If you want to know more, there is a website.

That being said, I eat poptarts, I eat ice cream, pizza, pie, etc. But my entire diet is not based off those foods. If I want it, I'll have it so long as my other needs have been met.

This is where I'm at with the whole diet thing too.
Plain and simple, I like to eat. I don't want to live my life depriving myself of the only things that I enjoy.
What would be the point of looking good if you're hating life?

Me specifically, I don't have any interest in ever being sub 10% BF.
I'd rather look like Derek Poundstone. I'm not saying he doesn't eat well, just that he eats for power, not leanness.

But that doesn't necessarily mean the foods he eats changes, it could be he just varies the quantities.

I eat basically whatever I enjoy eating. I hate sweet potatoes for the most part, does that mean I can't reach my goals bc I substitute lets say a serving of ice cream instead for the carbs? No it doesn't. All it means is that I have to pay attention for the day of the rest of my food intake and make sure that it meets the macro and caloric goals I set for myself. Does pigging out on pop tarts and ice cream make it harder to do so, yes of course it does, but that's why I eat the foods I enjoy in moderation rather than abstain from them so I never have the urge to pig out. The IIFYM guys on bb.com take this to an extreme and say "I can eat as much ice cream and candy as I want as long as it fits my macros". This is not what DCA/IIFYM is meant to stand for. Micronutrient and fiber needs are harder to meet with candy and pop tarts and micros are extremely important for biological processes. They have taken dieting from one extreme to the other extreme. Simply put, you can enjoy the foods you love eating in moderation so long as the vast majority of your intake is from whole and minimally processed foods to snide micronutrient sufficiency. It's not rocket science but many ppl take it to mean I can eat whatever I want when that's not really what it is saying. Moderation is not something many bodybuilder's are known for.

Agree, I was just saying that Derek ensures caloric sufficiency.

The second part of your post is exactly why I stay out of the often 10-page IIFYM shitstorms over there.
There is no middle ground for a lot of people.

One of the more infamous people from that forum put it nicely, "IIFYM is an intelligence test for the nutrition community."

Huh, wait...what..? I can eat ice cream and poptarts?

Pizza too..?

What about egg rolls?

I've read the 60+ page debates they have and it's sad ppl see what they want not whats actually written. You seem like an intelligent guy since you're able to weed thought the bs and gather the info that's pertinent, plus your questions the other day on HPTA and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) had me working lol, so I wouldn't get caught up in the shitstorms brother. There's nothing wrong with including processed foods in moderation but ppl see that and turn it to "let me eat ice cream for my sole carb macro!!!!" Neglecting the role of micronutrient sufficiency lol. I've seen that quote before lol, do you happen to remember who wrote it? It wouldn't surprise me if Wonderpug said it from bb.com hahahaha

Uggghhh the cheese on pizza ruins it for me bro. My biggest weakness is brownies haha but again by eating it when I want I never really have the urge to pig out on them (most of the time ;))

As I get more into this I hope to have a few more thought provoking conversations.
I'm still reading my eyeballs out, it's impressive how much information is compiled here.

That's because if you were to pig out on the kind of brownies YOU eat, you'd be callin 911 freakin out cause you can't breathe and your heart is beating super fast maaaaaaaaan.

As much as I agree with a lot of what is said here, I lack the self control to eat them in moderation. :( If left to it, I'd devour an entire extra large pizza no problem. :worried: I agree, it's that damn fat in the cheese that does me in.

Catabolic egg rolls! I KNEW there was something wrong with them outside being so damn tasty! You're going to fit right in here 71Avido.

I haven't made those brownies in a while lol. I have used the butter on pancakes, steaks, corn on the cob, baked potatoes etc. basically every recipe that calls for butter I "substitute" :D

Some ppl can't. If you're better abstaining and you know this more power to you brother. Whatever it takes (within reason of course) to get you to your goals :)

He was certainly a master troll at times, pre-ban of course.
After he called out Layne Norton on being on AAS things got weird.
