5x5 question

Hi there

New to the forums, but not to the game. Looks like a great place to learn

I wonder if someone could help me with a question please ? I have been looking at trying the 5x5 routine as it looks really good, however I am confused on whether I should be going to failure on the 4 sets after 5x5 ??

So for example chest would go like this ??

Flat bench 5x5 - maybe hit close to failure on last set

Incline dumbell press - 2 sets to failure in the 8-10 rep range

Flat dumbell flies - 2 sets to failure in the 8-10 rep range

Is that correct ??

Or no need to go to failure on those sets ??

Thanks.

When I was using 5x5, I did the higher rep sets but not necesarily to failure nor did I attempt to increase the weight on those movements week to week.

I used to think that failure was a must to make gains. Now I think that failure's good once in a while but not all the time. One rep shy of failure seems to be the best route for me to guard against injury.

Thanks.

Just to clarify, the 4 sets after the 5x5 should ALL be taken to positive failure ?? Or just the last sets for those two exercise ??

i would go to failure...also you may not always be able to but you DO want to try to increase the weights on the secondary exrcises..it wont do any good to use the same weights month after month..if i can get 2 sets of 10 with the weight its too light and next session ill bump it up..
