a question on creatine

is it ok to take creatine in orange juice. My friend said it wasn't because of the acid? Is this true
thanks

It can't possibly be true, because the acid in your stomach is like 1000 times stronger than the orange juice. If it were true, then creatine would be completely useless because your stomach acid would destroy it. This is not the case, obviously.

What kind of acid and what does it do to the creatine?

I'm not real sure but I believe oj has acetic acid (something like that) which is definetly different than what is in your stomach (HCL). Not real sure what it does to the creatine, but I have always read not to use oj. I don't think your supposed to use grapefruit juice or any other acidic juices.

Ok, then let's use some common sense here.

Creatine will break down in water over time (several days it will be pretty useless).

So I would assume that it would break down in an acid medium faster.

I seriously doubt that orange juice would destroy the creatine if you mixed it up and drank it immediately, but I would assume that it WOULD break it down faster because it is an acidic medium.

Then again, why take creatine with orange juice? It's low glycemic...take it with something high glycemic!

I have read that you shouldnt take it with anyhting high in vit. C because of the acidity. This does not destroy the creatine it just makes it a little harder to absorb. Of course leave an hour around when you have coffee tea or alcohol before you take your creatine because of the diuretic qualities of those substances. I would take mine with apple juice or grape juice. or just throw it in a protein shake.

I've just recently heard that vitamin C acts sort of like insulin. They say when large doses of vitamin C you have to be careful the person doesn't have low blood sugar because the vitamin C will act like insulin. I would think this would HELP the creatine uptake. What is the reason it is supposed to hinder it?

I would take it with glucose and maltodextrin, along with glutamine, some salt, and 300mg at least of ALA.

yeah but also too much vit. C can be toxic and then major diuretic effects will be employed in order to dispose of the high levels of vit C

Check out #14 on this webite
http://www.2think.org/creatine/creatineinfo.shtml

Seems like it is kind of back and forth I ust wouldnt take it with OJ to be safe

That first site doesn't look very reputable. They don't even know what ATP stands for, and has a bunch of other things wrong. Lactic acid isn't THE cause of muscle soreness, and it won't cause liver or kidney problems. Not to mention they give no reason WHY the orange juice is bad.

The second one mentions that since it's an acid, it will break down the creatine. Well, water will do the same if left for a while.

It would be a concern if you mix your creatine in orange juice and let it sit for a few hours, but who does that??? I don't see why anyone would use orange juice in the first place.
