American Red Cross blood donations

Recently I donated blood at American Red Cross. A week later i receive a letter from them. They say that i tested as 'reactive' on Hepatits B and that they discarded my blood. So I went to see my physician, she ordered another test which shows a little elevated ALT levels (35), but she says it is all good. Does anyone know if I go again to American Red Cross will they take my blood? Any other ways to get blood drawn for free?

You're probably deferred for life. Did your doc actually run a hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test, or did she only look at liver enzymes? There's a big difference as an infection may not be severe enough to actually influence your ALT/AST at this time. I was just in today and I swear I saw it say that in the little book they make you read before donating. You could always call them and ask, but it is likely you'll just have to go the therapeutic phlebotomy route from here on out.

Sorry for a late reply... Doctor ordered only a liver function panel.

ALT 9 - 33 IU/L 35 High
AST 12 - 41 IU/L 21
ALKALINE PHOSPHATASE 42 - 121 IU/L 53
BILIRUBIN, TOTAL 0.1 - 1.0 mg/dL 1.0
BILIRUBIN, DIRECT 0.0 - 0.2 mg/dL <0.1
TOTAL PROTEIN 6.0 - 8.3 g/dl 6.9
ALBUMIN 3.5 - 4.8 g/dl 4.3
ALBUMIN/GLOBULIN RATIO, SERUM/PLASMA 1.7

Actually hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) test was run by American Red Cross ad it was Nonreactive. Here are those 3 hepatitis tests they did:

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen Test - Nonreactive;
Hepatitis B Core Antibodies Test - Reactive;
HBV PCR - Negative

I honestly haven't looked into this in awhile, but I thought the Core test was the one that came back with a false positive the most; especially if the other two tests were negative/non-reactive. I'd definitely inquire to see if you can have another test done to verify - removing you from deferral. I don't know their policies on this, but it's a possibility that I'd look into at least. :)
