At what blood pressure is it time to get medicated?

I know that SCNTO knows a bit on this topic, so perhaps he will be kind enough to chime in.

At what blood pressure, in your opinion, indicates that it is time to press the physician for medication?

And when blood pressure jumps around all day, so you just use the average or do you use the high end? For example, in my case, my blood pressure tends to be much worse in the afternoon than it is in the evening. I remarked once that my blood pressure is fine as long as I'm not too stressed, but my wife pointed out that being stressed is part of my personality.

IMO......once it hits >130/80, it's time to start looking at lifestyle changes. Once it gets >140/90 it's time to seek medical help.

As far as it jumping around all day, that's a good question.

While On Cycle I also "Feel" that my bp is jumping around. Mostly During days it gets high while during the evening and nights it is much calmer.

I really feel that when it reaches 140/90 (what Stonecold also suggested) you need to look into getting some help. As for your bp jumping around all day that tends to happen to many people. A good time to check your bp is first thing in the morning, this is when people are at the highest risk for MI's and stroke due to elevation of catecholamines as well as the stickiness of the platelets at this time. This is why we suggest taking your bp meds first thing in the morning most of the time. I would look at the high blood pressure during the day in your circumstance since it is what is really important in regards to your health.

One thing that is confusing is figuring out which BP test to trust. The automatic blood pressure monitor that I purchased was chosen because many of the reviews said that its results were accurate: that is, they brought it to the doctor's office with them and the results from the office and the automatic check were nearly the same.

I just used it and the results were 147/95. Then I had my wife (currently in a reputable nursing school and getting her BSN) check it and it was something like 133/77. She claims her result is accurate, although I've never had it tested that low at the doctor's office.

BP even on my automatic meter is generally below 140/80 in the morning. But it is always significantly higher in the afternoon.

I very much appreciate the feedback.

I'm thinking that I might try and get a script. Father tried a variety of meds before finally settling on Zestril (an ACE inhibitor) which recently went generic, so maybe that's a good one to try first?

Cholesterol is above 300 even with a statin...seems to be a genetic cause as it was like that even as a teenager. Don't know if that might increase the desire to have the BP under control or not....kinda thought it might.

The three main risk factors for heart disease include:
1.)smoking
2.)cholesterol greater than 200
3.)hypertension
So yes it does make a difference if your cholesterol is high.

At least I don't smoke!

Wife says I need more cardio and she is right, but asthma makes it a pain in the ass for sure. No excuses though....gotta do it.

Farina, all those numbers are in the normal range.
Mrank I really do not know what to tell you concerning your bp. I personally do not trust elecronic bp monitors as I have noticed many times that my readings are significantly lower/higher depending on the cuff. I would trust your wife as I am sure she knows what she is doing. She could even teach you to check your own bp with her tools so you can hear it for yourself. I really do not think that they would start with an ACEi, as we usually start with a diuretic and work from there.

I though LDL was supposed to be under 100 and HDL was supposed to be above 40?

I thought I had a cholesterol problem. THe results below scared me. Also my Testoserone total was 384. THis is low right? The doc said it was. He wants me retested tommorrow. I'm decently strong and fit. 238pds clothed, 6ft bench 360. How can I lift like that with low test. That's why he thinks something may have been off and wants it retested. Aslos is testing FSH next time.

BP 108/60
Liver: normal
total cholestrol: 186
LDL:120
HDL:34
Triglicerides: 160
Thyroid: normal 2.15
Sugar: normal 98

I take Lotrel in A. M. It is also a diuretic as most Blood Pressue Medicines are.
High Blood Pressure over 150 gives me a migraine. If your cholestrol is 300 you
should go to a cardio doc. (heart).. They have many different types of B P Meds
High B P and Cholestrol is a T I M E B O M B... If you have insurance of money get
a yearly stress test. I have stents in my heart. Cardio Doc says Gear O.K.
These doctors can save your life.

Farina --they most likely got your ldl and hdl mixed up. Blood test dosn't
measue free testosterone. For that you need a saliva test. My free test
was six times my bound test. Yours in most likely near a thousand. Guessing.

You never told us your HDL before this. The LDL is a bit high but it really depends on what you use as your reference. I have seen things showing <100 and others showing <130 being ok. I personally want my patients around 100 or less but your LDL is not anything that I would be overly concerned with at this point. I am sure your doc told you to watch what you eat and excercise etc... which is what I would tell you at first as well.

The rest of your results are in the normal range or barely off normal. I am not too sure what your conerns are. If I am overlooking something please remind me.

I believe that she is performing the test accurately, but I wasn't sure if her cuff/gauge was calibrated correctly. I guess it probably is.

The nurses at the doctor's office use a machine for testing BP. They also tell me that the monitor at the drug stores aren't calibrated correctly. Which confuses the hell out of me; why wouldn't they be just as good as the one at the doctors office.

Didn't know that. I wonder why my father is using an ACE inhibitor then. I remember that he tried a variety of blood pressure meds before settling on Zestril.

I obviously have a lot of reading to do about high BP and BP pharmocology.

I'm afraid that if I do decide to cycle, down the road, then my BP may go up during the cycle, and according to SCNTO, that's the worst time to have high BP due to that entire enlarged heart thing. So, I have that in the back of my head as well.

drug store variety are self use.
if you place the cuff poorly...bad reading
they are meant to give a ball park estimate
