Dip form question

laxmel2

I'm kind of a big deal...
i love doing dips. when im at the top with my arms extended, should my elbows be locked and then i go back down.

I don't think a complete lockout is necessary as this can be kind of bone jarring when you have a lot of weight attached but if you can go away with it with no joint pain than more power to you. More ROM is not a bad thing.

something about dips is that..most people can't do it due to shoulder issues...like myself...sucks really. don't lockout

I dont' think u need to lock out ea. time, just get close. I dont' do dips cuz of my shoulder injury from a few yrs back. Dips bother me. Pisses me off cuz dips are such a good workout. I just do reverse grip bench every now and then. I can also get away w/doing dips on 2 benches and put plates on my legs, but if i do normal dips it messed up my shoulder. Kinda wierd.

I didnt injure my shoulder like you did josh, but dips were killing my shoulder when I started doing them consistently. I found that if I keep my legs straight up and down instead of bent it keeps me from getting the pain in my shoulder for some reason. Think with them bent I had a tendency to lean forward a bit to much and thats what was doing it to me.

Good point BB although leaning forward hits the chest more....straight up and down hits the tris. I'm in the same boat and it is noted all over this board...shoulders are holding me back.

Are you going past parallel when you get all this shoulder pain?
Going deep seems to put a lot more torque on the joint, and doesn't really add much to the exercise.
I've always thought my shoulder problems started with weighted dips and going too deep.

Don't lock up! Your elbows will take a beating. I myself love dips, it's my favorite workout for Tri's. I go as heavy as possible with my Tri's

Ex: Dips- I start off with my body weight just to warm up, then add 90lbs (2x45plates) hit them off for a good 10reps, move onto 115lbs (2x45plates & 25plate) do them for 10 reps, move onto 135 (3x45plates) for 10 reps, for my last set, I use 180lbs (4x45plates) and do them for 8-10 reps. Total weight is 370lbs. I weigh 190lbs. Extremely difficult but the results are amazing! I never see anyone do this kind of weight. I think most people are scared of it.
