eating raw oats?

i mix 1/2 cup of dry oats with my protein shake and i just read Frosty's post saying oats, rice, beans, legumes should be soaked before eating. Does this mean ive been drinking this shit for no reason? Hope not.

It wouldn't be for no reason. Worst case scenario is you get some phytic acid, but some isn't a big deal. It's when you eat lots of it that you really should be soaking it.

One thing I *don't* know is how much of an issue this is with oats most people eat. They are processed a bit and some say they're precooked. If this is the case, then the phytic acid content would be reduced a bit, but again, I don't really know too much about this. 1/2 a cup wouldn't be something real bad either way, though.

Phytic acid inhibits the uptake of calcium, magnesium, zinc, copper, and iron in the intestines. A little won't hurt, but a lot over time can be a problem.

It can also help get rid of toxins from the body, so it can have some short-term benefits in a detox type diet, but long term it is not good.
