God bless the smith machine

one of the reasons one shouldn't use the smith is because it doesn't involve your stabilizer muscles - this gives a false sense of strength. the other reason would be that the direction of motion (straight up, straight down) doesn't take into account that as humans, our natural ROM will be slightly curved on most exercises. anyway, since i'm no one in the field of weightlifting/bodybuilding i thought i'd give you a link:

in that guinness has posted a link to a charles poliquin article on t-nation... i think poliquin is someone that people SHOULD be listening to when it comes to weightlifting.

just ditch the smith is my advice, from what i've seen, heard and experienced myself. if the issue is lifting alone and requiring a spotter, then you're better off lifting in a power rack IMO.

Well, I managed to get to 5'8" 230lbs with the use of the smith machine, hammer machines, and free weights. It works, and it will continue to work.

Flase sense of strength???? Hmmmm.... When you are presses 4 plates per side it is heavy and it builds muscle, and it is a hell of a lot safer.

power rack?

Smith Machine works fine for me.

I use a power rack for squats, deadlifts, rack Deads, BB Rows

I like to do my pressing on machines. I have had issues with my shoulders and the smith and hammer equipment let me lift heavy without putting my shoulder in compromise.

If you guys are so against the smith, then don't use it. I have found it works well for me and I'll continue to use it.

And I'm not a 180lb know it all either.

Overhead presses with DBs or free weight BB cause me pain to the extent that I cannot sleep on either side. On the smith they do not. I do rotator cuff work regularly and have been through two bouts of physiotherapy, it's not like I'm doing anything stupid in my routine and my problems were never caused by any sort of trauma.

What should I do homeboy? Just stop shoulder pressing?
