How important is deadlifting?

I enjoy doing them because of the amount of weight involved, but for bodybuilding purposes I find them to be extremely overrated. squatting deep and heavy good mornings give me better results.

they should be included more often in bodybuilders training menus. sure, squats and GMs are good for legs, hams, glutes and abs, but DLs will also thicken your back in addition to working those same muscles that the squats/GMs do. however because of the CNS drain with deads, you obviously have to exercise alot more caution to prevent burning out.

to the thread starter: deads are important if strength is a goal or even in bodybuilding as i pointed out above. however if your goal is to be a beach boy (not trying to be an asshole - just saying this in general, not directing it at you) then yea, you could probably drop deads and do some leg curls, leg extensions, cable rows, pull downs, preacher curls, DB curls, BB curls, cable curls, seated BB curls, pec deck, cable flyes, DB flyes, tricep kickbacks, skull crushers, and 500 crunches on the ab king pro, try to do most of this when you get in to the gym on international chest and bi's day (monday).

I have never seen anyone who regularly did heavy deadlifts that looked wimpy. Deadlifts build core strength better than anything else--squats do too but deadlifts build overall thickness and solid strength--they are not overrated-however they are underutilized by many gym attendees. If your gym does not allow you to do deadlifts--find a real gym or buy some heavy rubber plates and do them at home.

I love deadlifting, but I've improved my deadlifts a lot over the past few years and I haven't really seen any great visual results with my physique (admittedly my deadlifts aren't that great still, I'm still in the 400+lb range which is relatively weak). I still deadlift all the time though becuase I love the exercise. There are few things that I like more than putting a shitload of weight on and lifting it off the floor

im afraid to put that much strain on my lower back. i hurt it once before doing deads with bad form because i wasnt flexible
