How many days a week to work out?

I was working out a muscle group twice a week, and have since changed it to once a week thinking I've been overtraining. Now I work out every other day. I've noticed my muscles are more sore the following day after each workout. Should I continue to lift everyother day or back to 5-6 days a week, a muscle group 2x's a week.

2 days a week is too much. Work each muscle group once. Here's my routine. Each workout is 45 minutes to an hour. This is pretty basic, but gets the job done.

mon - chest
tues - legs, calves
wed - off
thurs - tris, shoulders
fri - back, bis
