How much is too much? HELP!!!!!!

Okay, so here's the deal.

I typically do two muscle groups a day.
Example: Back/Tris. Chest/Bis. I'll mix it up, it's not always the same.

I really like to work out 6 days a week if I can. Sometimes I'll work out 4 - 6 days straight before taking a day off, always mixing up muscle groups.

I don't know as much as I would like about lifting routines, so I pretty much go in there and might do for example... 8 different work outs for a muscle group with like 3 sets of 8 - 10 reps of each. Most of the time each set is a bit heavier than the one before.

So, I pretty much just work out until I feel the muscle group is good and worked. Basically I work it until it burns good enough to where I can hardly lift anymore.

I know there is such thing as too much, so I'm asking for some input! I hate days I have to take off, and I hate training light even more. How hard can I push myself and still have it be okay?

And, is it actually okay to work out twice a day if I so choose?

I've read several places that many athletes choose to do this with good results.

IMO your overtraining. I know it sucks when you're not in the gym, especially if you're new to the game, but you gotta take time off or you'll never grow.

Everyone is different, so you gotta find out what works for you. The key is to pick a regimen and stay on it for at least 10-12 weeks. Changing your routine around all the time is good, but you gotta stay on one routine for a while to see if it works.

As for two a days, i would say at your level NO. Hell, i've been doing this almost 20 years and I have never, nor would I ever do two a days. Your body needs to time to recover.

Remember, you don't grow in the gym... you grow after you replenish your body with quality food and REST!!

So, when's the best time to stop work on a muscle group in a given day? I usually just lift until they feel dead/completely worked. Not so much that they're killed though. When do I know when to stop?

great question, only you can answer though. And it depends on your intensity. For example, i can go in the gym and do 5 sets of 10 with 315 on squats and pick up my shit and go home feeling like i was hit by a train.

Again, it depends on you, but i think you're doing to much. Try starting with 3 exercises, heavy weight with good form, 6-10 reps each set.

Two things usually inhibit growth in regards to training. Lack of intensity or too much volume.

Another thing that I don't think a lot of guys acknowledge when it comes to the topic of over training, especially the younger guys, is burning out your nervous system. This was a big thing my MMA coach always talked about and being a young guy myself I just always thought he was nutty until I felt what he was talking about. I was doing MMA 3 times a week for 2 hours at a crack and also training in the gym 3 days a week. I finally started getting the symptoms my coach warned about. To sum it up, its like a big crash. you lose motivation, your always tired, you can start getting depressed and a host of other things.

If you are training really heavy and putting in your time in the gym I think you should defiantly take a week off once every 6 months or so and just kick back and relax.
