When I put my pinky on the little strips on the bar I can bench the most weight but as soon as I put my thumbs on the strips my bench drops a lot even tho the extension is a lot shorter. Is my chest that much weaker them my tries? How wide do you guys go?

My standard grip is with my middle finger on the line.

I vary my grips on speed work. Index, Pinky, closegrip.

How much are you benching.

345 when my pinky is on the ring and about 300 with thumb on the ring

grip will mean very little at that weight. Training methods will mean much more.

Yea I know grip shouldnt mean that much. Thats why im so pissed that im so much weaker when I go little wide... It doesnt make sence for me to lose that much strength when I go 4 inches wider.

Remember to multiply that by two and keep PBs quote in mind:

31 7/8 is the allowable maximum in meets.

8/32 = 25% difference.

For what I could do with 10 reps with my forefinger at the ring, I could do 8 with pinky at the ring which was about a 5% difference (using maxcalc link in sig). I'm tall with a relatively long arm reach.

where did you get that from? varying grips makes a diffference at any weight.

Training with different grips yes.

I don't think whne your max is lower that the perfect grip means all that much. Especially raw. I used to false grip, now I wrap around. I used to bench with my ring finger in the groove and I have very long arms. Now I go with the middle finger in the groove. As long as i'm out at least to my pinky the difference is negligable. If I go too wide or too narrow it hurts my lift. This is more so for going narrower.

I do agree that verying grips in training is helpful if not crucial.

I'd really like to try that bands and DB thing. That isn't the way I pictured it and it seems much safer than what I had in mind.
