Hey I was sitting here debating with my girl about the name of the muscles in the back. What is the name of the two muscles that run at the base of your spine. For instance if I am doing stiff-legged deadlifts or back extensions what is the scientific name for the lower back muscles used to perform these excecises

Yeh thats what I thought. It's funny some diagrams show it as if the lats connect to them or even imply that they are all the same. If this was true I could do lat pull downs and work my lower back at the same time. This is not the case... I was right!!!! HEHEHEHEHEHEHEH

The erector spinae can also be subdivided as they are made up of three muscles. They are: iliocastalis, longissimus, spinalis

It's amazing how smart a text book can make you sound :) ................if you want to get technical the lats do infact have an attachment (the thoracolumbar fascia) that arises from the sacral, lumbar and thoracic vertebrae and also the superspinous and interspinous ligaments.

the muscle you are talking about is the erector spinae( with its three components)
