I've been using straps for years when doing shrugs. As my weight moved up on various arm exercises my grip was weak, so I decided to stop using the straps when doing shrugs to see if I would notice a difference.

It's been two months now and I've managed to add more weight when doing shrugs. Not as much as when I was lifting with straps but overall my grip significantly improved.
 
You could start with doing the same as when doing shrugs, but only holding the bar for as long as you can...
 
farmers walk. grab a heavy dumbell for each hand. and hold on as long as you can while you walk around the gym :D
