low back injury

well I have done it again.

5 years ago I had hurt my lower back deadlifting. The tissue in between the bones of the spine was crushed, 2 of the spine bones in the lower back were touching.

after not training and some chiropractic care the pain eventually went away.

Somehow it came back a year ago, not sure how. Maybe lifting something at work. it lasted a month or two, off and on, some days worse than others, but went away.
Been back to training seriously around 6 months now and I'm 2 months into a test/tren cycle. (there has been training in the last 5 years but just not really regularly)
I noticed saturday morning after my deadlifts that it was very sore, i went to pick up the barbell off of the rack for a 4th set and i felt a stabbing pain in my lower back, and had to stop.

So now it is sunday morning and my lower back is hurting like hell. all too familiar kind of pain, in the exact same area.

I have just recently switched to every muscle twice per week, about one week ago. before i was doing once per week.

Is this too much stress on the lower back? Is that what may have caused this? a little too high volume after an insufficient recovery period?

what do you guys do for your lower backs in your routines? I find it pretty amazing anyone could deadlift 400+ lbs. damn lower back is just so delicate.

and how can I get rid of this pain? I have to go to work tomorrow morning.

I have a compression fracture of the L1 and L3 lumbar in my spine. They basically move as one disc now. I did this snow skiing long ago. Ever since, I cannot due regular squats or dead lifts at all. I remember way back whe I was doing them, I would get what felt like someone stabbing a knife into my spine and I would literally drop at times just reaching for something like a pencil. After a thorough exam, my doc said if I wished to continue to do these exercises, I would be wheel chair bound within a year. That sucks because they are two big mass building exercises. Instead I do hack machine squats and dont seem to have much of a problem with that exercise as long as I dont go too heavy. I don't know how bad your back is, but if its anywhere near the condition mine is in, stay away from the regular non supportive squats and dead lifts.

It was probably simply caused by bad form. The 'Tissue' is called your discs and unfortunately, they dont regenerate once theyre damaged. I happent to have a lower back condition called Degenerative Disc Disease so many of the discs in my lower back are gone or almost there. Most of the year im in pretty good shape but occasionally itll go out and sideline me for a week or 2. Ive learned to live with it. Ironically, since my deadlifts have gone up over 500lbs my back pain has become even less too. If you do it with proper form, it shouldnt be an issue.

I have a bad low back too. I was hit by a car while riding a bike more than 20 years ago. At that time, I was told not to lift weights any more. I got back into lifting and spoke to physical therapists/chiropractors that agreed, but avoided squats and deadlifts since I was told to avoid that kind of load on my low back. I finally did start squatting (first smith, eventually free) and a few years later, deadlifting. I have to be careful, but my back pain and weakness got better than it had ever been. I eventually squatted 395 and deadlifted 500.

Now, I am more prone to injuring my back than a "normal" person, I can't go too heavy (or I'm really risking injury) and I have to be very careful regardless, but thank god I didn't take "doctor's orders" as gospel. You have to take it all with a grain of salt.

In the short term, icing the area and taking NSAID's like aspirin or ibuprofen helps. I have also got some relief from chiropractors and physical therapy. I can do all kinds of stuff that I might have thought I couldn't do, but then sometimes I'll hurt it doing something silly like standing up too quickly. Listen to your body. If you're training and feel pain, rack the weight immediately and stop training that area.

If I were you, I'd go easy and do the ice and ibuprofen for a week. If it isn't at least better, you should probably be seeing a doc and finding out what happened.

I *thought* I was deadlifting with really good form. I always keep my back as straight as possibly. I don't bend over too much like I see in some deadlifting videos.

The part of the lift that seems a little bit awkward is the going back down to the floor part. I do all of my excercises pretty slow contracting everything fully. I never do anything quickly or throw weights up. sometimes it feels like the weight is pulling my back down too hard. I bet this is when the injury occured.
I have a really long torso. I wonder if this gives me poor leverage for deadlifting. I doubt I would ever be able to deadlift 500lbs.

well I had to call in to work this morning. still hurts too bad even with these methocarbamol/ibuprofen tabs. I pray some food and rest will heal this up quickly
