I notice a lot of people come though here and other boards with low Vitamin D. We always suggest testing it because low Vitamin D will make a person feel cruddy. Given the sedentary and office dwelling society people live in now, often times they just need a little Vitamin D to get them into range. There might be more to this low Vitamin D than what the media is telling us. After digging around the net I stumbled upon this interesting link on Vitamin D, enjoy.

Low Vitamin D Levels and Low Vit D in Parathyroid Disease and Hyperparathyroidism. Low Vitamin D Is Not Good For You!

What stuck out to me is the hard to diagnose cases of hyperparathyroid. Patients reported serum calcium in the 9's and low vitamin d, or in range but on the low end of range. Meaning theres a good chance that some people who are hypogonadal, low or normal-low vitamin d, and have normal calcium may need to have parathyroid hormone checked.

That was a lot to read! I think I missed it. Is the reason to not supplements vitamin D when calcium levels are already high due to it causing calcium levels to increase even more via better calcium absorption?

Yeah at that point, if someone presents with a serum calcium(from a cmp lab) of anything greater than 10mg/dL, and their vitamin d is less than around 40 ng/mL at that point a Parthyroid Hormone(PTH) test is indicated. Also, a parathyroid adenoma makes regulation of serum calcium very difficult, so in such a case serum calcium would fluctuate. So if a person has been taking over 1000IU of vitamin D a day and its mostly ineffective at raising serum Vitamin D levels, they should run a PTH, CMP, Serum Ionized Calcium. Hyperparathyroid can be tricky, sometimes it presents in people with normal vitamin D, and normal serum calcium. Symptoms would be kidney stones, broken bones, chipped or decaying teeth, fatigue, water hydration issues, arthritic change in joints, bone density loss, blood pressure issues, enlarged heart.

Or... Just get some ultraviolet beta rays and let your skin do the work. :)

Yes, vitamin D is very undervalued and often overlooked. Great post. :)

I had graves disease. When they removed my thyroid the damaged my parathyroid. I now have to take otc calcium along with a prescription vitamin D to help with absorption.

sorry to hear that man. i hear its pretty common for them to nick the parathyroids on a total thyroidectomy
