Pre - Workout Supplementation (WHY)...

Or more specifically...

Why does everyone seem to recommend about 20g of whey protein and about 30g of slow digesting carbs about 20-30 minutes prior to training??????

I eat a 40-50g of quality protein and complex carb MEAL (brown rice or a yam) about 1- 1/2 to 2 hours prior to training, and can not see eating additional food just before training... I also think the way I approach it is as good as any.

If I am wrong, please help me understand!!!

References to more info would be nice too.

Thanks.

if i eat anything within 30 minutes of lifting, it's guarenteed to come back up.

I have to train 4x a week at 6am, so you can bet I'm not eating ANYTHING. I always go on an empty stomach, but usually drink a zerocarb Monster on the way to the gym.

At one point in time, I think I drank Maltodextrin before workouts, but that was some time ago.

I would be interested in knowing the benefits/negative affects of either taking or not taking in protein/carbs before a training session.

I do exactly the same, works fine for me. I also feel it is unnecessary to be taking in another meal (albeit small) before lifting.

that fine. its the same thing i do + fruit.

most people recommend goofy shit because they read about it in magazines or see some nut at the gym doing it. In this case, its because if you dont have 30g of whey protein hydroslate every 42.769 minutes your body fall into a deathly catabolic state and your muscles will all melt off.

some advanced protocols call for specific timing, but in general, calories in vs calories out is the main issue.
