The mental health of employees is just as important as their physical health will be the message to bosses at a professionals’ briefing to be held later this month.
The Priory Hospital Woking has joined forces with Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and The Postgraduate Medical School, University of Surrey to present a one day symposium – ‘Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace’.
The event will take place on 30th March 2011 from 9am to 5pm at the Postgraduate Medical School, University of Surrey, Guildford GU2 7WG.
The key messages will be:-
1. Whatever the size of an organisation, its workforce is its most valuable asset, and the health of the workforce is inextricably linked to that of the organisation
2. Health is defined as mental, physical and social wellbeing. That is, how the individual functions, and copes with critical incidents in their personal lives, in the community and at work
3. Awareness of mental health is essential for an organisation to fulfil its statutory obligations
4. The minor mental illnesses; stress, anxiety, depression, and problem drinking cost the exchequer more than industrial strife, and account for up to a third of all GP attendances. Those in employment being particularly vulnerable to inevitable workplace stress
5. The workplace is a microcosm in which mental health can be specifically monitored by performance and behaviour
6. Hence the importance of identification, sensitive intervention and appropriate support, both pastoral and ergonomic
7. Sleep is key to all aspects of health
8. By virtue of their caring / family role, women’s health requires specific consideration

The aim of the symposium is to address the administrative and clinical identification of vulnerable employees, appropriate support or treatment when indicated, the Disability Discrimination Act and the management of both short and longer term sickness absence. Attendees will be eligible for up to six CPD hours.
The speakers will include occupational health, primary care, mental health and human resource professionals. They include Dr Paul Bailey, Consultant Psychiatrist at the Priory Hospital Woking, Surgeon Captain Morgan O’Connell, Lynn Richardson, Director of Human Resources at SABP NHS Foundation Trust and Professor Christopher H. Fry from the University of Surrey.
